Employee Engagement

In a nutshell:

Highly engaged employees are strong advocates for any business.
For this level of engagement, the military style management processes and systems, prevalent in the UK, must be dropped in favour of management by mutual consent. Where people work, because thereĀ  are both financial and non-financial benefits.
How is this achieved?
By ensuring that every employee is valued, with their own aspirations embodied into the goals and objectives agreed with them.
Why?
Because highly engaged employees are enthusiatic about what they do, and enthusiasm is contagious. People respond positively to enthusiasm, and this can translate into more business.

There are many ways to engage employees, but what does your selected employment style achieve?

Traditional command and control structures were developed in military establishments over the last 100 or so years, and yet this is still the preferred management method used in the UK today. While this may be a valid method for those businesses where the employees are expected to react without thinking, in a knowledge based economy, businesses are not making the best of ttheir employees skills and abilities if they follow this approach. Far better, (and I am certainly not alone in this), to create an environment where employees are encouraged to bring their brains to work, where they have a say in the way the company achieves results, where they are given information to allow them to engage in the vision of the company.

As businesses, we want the enthusiasm this engagement brings. We want employees to be advocates for the business, to be evangelical, but this will only be achieved if we work in conjunction with our employees by providing them with the means and desire to achieve. This requires that we also help them satisfy their own needs and desires in a mutually agreed set of aims and objectives that they can buy into, that gives them a sense of belonging and involvement. We know that enthusiasm is contagious. We know that enthusiastic employees communicate the benefits of the business to anyone who will listen. We know this brings additional business. The outcome is a business that is a delight to work in, and achieves the goals it sets itself through the engagement of its employees.
